TY Sustainability- Beach Cleanup Day

As part of TY Social Studies class on Sustainability 4TC organised a ‘beach cleanup’ in Dun Laoghaire last Friday 19th Jan.

The whole class went to Dun Laoghaire seafront, just off the pier to investigate what kind of rubbish was being washed up in the area.

The results were extremely interesting. The class collected all the rubbish they could find and decided to group it and catalogue it to see who or what was responsible for the majority of rubbish in the area.

They found the following in the space of two hours
25 coffee cups from local coffee shops
20 McDonalds cups
150 glass bottles
Pot plants
A buggy
A shopping trolley
Metal fences
Processed plastic sheeting
12 cigarette/fire lighters
15 large pieces of cloth/textiles
200 cans
Cardboard
Fishing rope and wire

Most of the above items are not biodegradable. Some of the above are recyclable. How does it all end up in the sea?

As part of the Dun Laoghaire-Rathdown community it is our responsibility to help keep our local and wider environment free from pollution.

Remember to Reduce, Reuse and Recycle but most importantly Refuse single use plastic.

‘Plastic Outta The Park!’

Well done to all involved
